Regional Skills West is a Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science initiative which serves the counties of Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. The Regional Skills West Forum supports businesses across the West region in assessing and developing skills for their employees. The work of the West Regional Skills Forum is supported by key industry, economic and education partners from across the region, who all work together, through the forum in identifying and implementing pro-active responses to address current and future skills needs. As part of this work, an industry-led Manufacturing Excellence skills network was set up with leading employers with the goal of collaborating in identifying and resolving skills gaps and issues and converting knowledge into best practices, for the manufacturing sector in the West Region. Members include NUI Galway, Atlantic University, Mayo-Sligo-Leitrim and Galway-Roscommon Education and Training Boards, Cobotics Skillnet, ICBE Productivity Skillnet, Industry 4.0 Skillnet, Boston Scientific Ireland, Medtronic, Nádhúra Design, Cambus Medical, Thermoking/Trane Technologies, Penn Engineering, Harmac Medical, CPS, TE Connectivity/Creganna, the IWIN network, Mbryonics and Anecto. This report was commissioned to provide actionable insights into the skills needs, barriers and opportunities faced by Micro & SME manufacturing companies in relation to Industry 4.0. The conclusions presented in this report are those of the authors based on the research presented and analysed.
