Abstract
This thesis is an annotated edition of the personal unpublished journal of Caroline Synge (1818-1862) which she kept from November 1834 to November 1859 and which has survived as a manuscript in the possession of the author of this thesis. It is a remarkable and unique record of the thoughts, ambitions, fears, experiences and creative endeavours of one young woman in the world of the Anglo-Irish gentry and middle class over the course of twenty-five years of the mid nineteenth century.
