Abstract
The routing of a new motorway, the M3, through the valley between the Hill of Tara and Skreen, prompted international controversy. Conor Newman traces the history of a proposal that did irreparable damage to the culturally important royal landscape of Tara. In recounting the efforts made by scholars (both Irish and international) and local groups to stop an extraordinary act of cultural vandalism, he also records the campaign made by official Ireland to force the project through.
