Abstract
In this study we examine the biodiversity and ecosystem service (ES) value of the woodlands at Kylemore Abbey, which host a significant invasion of Rhododendron ponticum. The key objectives were to quantify the biodiversity in terms of tree species richness and ground flora richness, assess the carbon storage and carbon sequestration values of the woodland as regulating ecosystem services and provide insight into the impact of R. ponticum on these ecosystem services. Field surveys identified 24 tree species and large areas of the woodland which are dominated by native species including Quercus robur and Alnus glutinosa. In parts the woodland also hosts a range of non-native trees planted for aesthetic value. The woodlands as a whole are estimated to contain €3,472,188.31 worth of carbon storage value and sequester €144,774 worth of carbon per year. The invasion of R. ponticum was found to negatively impact these figures by displacement of tree species. These findings highlight the important role that woodlands play in providing carbon storage and sequestration and emphasise the need for management of invasive species for both biodiversity and ecosystem service benefit.
